LegitScript Expands Merchant Underwriting With Kompliant Integration

By MFJ Staff | Sources: LegitScript, and Digital Transactions

Key takeaway: Acquirers using LegitScript’s updated underwriting service get bad-actor matching, merchant category verification, and Mastercard MATCH Pro scoring in one workflow. It also has the ability to reassess merchants after approval as risk profiles change.

LegitScript has folded workflow and decision automation technology from Kompliant, the compliance orchestration company it acquired in 2025, into its merchant-underwriting service. Acquirers now have a more automated way to vet and re-screen merchants.

The Portland, Oregon-based risk and compliance vendor said the update combines Kompliant’s know-your-business, know-your-customer, and fraud-detection workflow with LegitScript’s own merchant-risk data. All these inside one configurable workflow built around a user’s credit and risk policies, according to Digital Transactions.

The integration feeds three proprietary risk signals into that workflow. Merchant Category Detection compares a merchant’s self-reported category code against LegitScript’s independently detected classification. Merchant Match checks merchant details against LegitScript’s database to surface potential ties to known bad actors. Web Content Scan analyzes a merchant’s website in real time for prohibited content and card-network rule violations.

LegitScript said the update also orchestrates verification checks, and scores merchants against Mastercard MATCH Pro. This then lets acquirers reassess merchants that have already been approved as their businesses and risk profiles change over time, per LegitScript’s announcement.

Why it matters: Re-screening approved merchants as their risk profile shifts closes a gap that bad actors have historically exploited by passing an initial review and then changing their business model or website content later. Combining category-code verification, bad-actor matching, and card-network screening into an automated workflow gives acquirers a faster way to catch that drift before it turns into fines, card-network violations, or fraud losses.
