ACI Worldwide has agreed to acquire Cranium Ventures, a developer of card-transaction switching technology, in a deal expected to close by the end of the third quarter of 2026. ACI announced the acquisition on September 1, 2026, with the news covered the same day by Digital Transactions, Finextra, and Payments Dive.
Cranium Ventures will be folded into ACI’s Connetic for Cards unit, the payments orchestration platform ACI launched in March 2026. ACI Worldwide processes more than 300 billion card transactions annually across its various business lines, according to the company. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Card switching technology sits at the center of how a transaction gets routed from a merchant’s point of sale to the right card network and issuer for authorization. Adding Cranium’s microservices-based switching capability gives ACI a more modern, modular option to offer processors and merchants inside its existing orchestration stack, rather than requiring them to bolt on a separate switching vendor.
Why it matters: This is another sign that orchestration and switching capabilities are consolidating under fewer, larger platforms. For merchants and PSPs choosing a processing partner, it is worth asking how a vendor’s switching infrastructure is built and whether recent acquisitions like this one will change performance, uptime, or fees once the integration is complete.
